Main Story
President Hassen briefs Watanabe—an ace pilot of the Babylonian Task Force—regarding an upcoming emergency mission. The mission is the final step of Operation Arcadia: a large-scale evacuation of maintenance facilities, personnel, and supplies from Earth to Babylonia. The operation is nicknamed the “Great Retreat” because humanity is retreating to the relative safety of Earth’s orbit to escape the threat of the Punishing Virus. Another pilot participating in the mission is the legendary veteran Cyril. Watanabe and Cyril reminisce about their past before the mission begins. Watanabe learns that Cyril is the father of his deceased comrade Bruce. Watanabe tells Cyril that Bruce was the one who helped him find a reason to live, but Cyril remains bitter. Not only does the veteran regret his powerlessness, but he also expresses disdain at Babylonia for secretly evacuating the “VIPs” and their extravagant belongings to safety as part of the operation.
As soon as the mission begins, the situation goes awry—the Corrupted and an unknown assailant attack the launch site of the supply shuttle. The assailant is Cyril, who claims that he will never forgive Babylonia for their cowardice and that he will reveal their hypocrisy to the world. Watanabe attempts to stop him, saying that he will nonetheless continue to protect humanity and their future to honor Bruce’s legacy.
The battle ends in Watanabe’s victory. Before his death, Cyril tells the younger man to keep believing in what he wants to believe and to never forget Earth and those who have fought for it.
The incident with Cyril impacts Watanabe greatly, leading him to walk a different path from Babylonia’s. He asks Hassen that he be allowed to leave Babylonia and instead work with the stranded ground military bases on Earth. Hassen grants the request to thank Watanabe for his service to humanity, despite being fully aware that it is forbidden for a Construct to leave Babylonia.
